Hey friends! As promised, here are the answers and intel from my instagram poll and question box regarding picking a refrigerator. I took a poll asking if you prefer side-by-side or French door.
The results: 17% side-by-side and 83% French door
Personally, I have been wanting a French door fridge for quite some time (the photo above is our old side-by-side fridge). After seeing people’s responses, I still want one, but had a lot of new things to consider! For instance: I don’t want the ice in the door and would rather have it in the freezer drawer, but I need to be ok with little dirty hands grabbing ice out of the bottom drawer. Also, the kid’s likely wouldn’t be able to get their own water if the dispenser is in the inside door as opposed to on the outside of the fridge. These are important things to consider and I love how helpful the NTK community was!
Some important things to consider:
the actual interior space (note below that all are not the same size)
counter depth verses standard size
if you want ice in the fridge door or in the freezer
if you have a deep freezer/alternate freezer space
if you want the ease of the ice/water dispenser, or if the door fridge space is more important to you
what is the umbrella company that makes the fridge
Below is the intel on specific types, things to consider, etc. *HUGE SHOUTOUT* to my VA Jessica for getting all this info together. I put them in order of the number of positive responses they received.
I am linking some that received lots of praise so you can jump over and check them out and get a visual.
KitchenAid: 190 positive responses
Recommended platinum interior, sexy, lots of fridge space and extra drawers
Easy to clean, adjustable shelves, good drawers for snacks (additional drawers)
Counter depth is poor, if you can find one that’s deeper, do it
However a lot voted that counter depth looks much better
Ice in freezer, water in fridge, never breaks
Water dispenser: get the pressure point below water dispenser so 1 hand operation
Ikea: Lots of drawers, not too big, spout water dispenser
Notes from the comment box/DMs:
Kitchenaid and Maytag fall under Whirlpool
A lot of people recommend shopping fridges at Costco
People are divided on french doors: don’t like that you have to open both doors or that one has to be closed before the other or it won’t seal. However, just as many people say there’s extra space and it looks nicer.
8 people said a sub zero fridge is to die for
A lot of people agree water dispenser in the door takes up important real estate
A lot of people recommend counter depth because nothing gets lost and makes your kitchen look bigger, BUT just as many say you lose too much space so make sure to get bigger.
Water spout inside the door makes it hard for kids to get, but gives you more space in the door. Some said it’s a plus that kids can’t mess with it
Fridge with freezer at the bottom has the most space
Kitchenaid has good prices on scratched/dented one at Sears online outlet
Get one with lots of interior lights, makes it feel huge
Get one with a drawer between fridge and freezer
Make sure freezer has layers to it
Crisper under the door to fridge is a great feature for snacks/kids
Solid plastic shelves in freezer better than the grates
Freezerless fridge is awesome (3 people mentioned this)
Alright friends! I hope some of this helps whenever you go to make your own fridge purchase. Many thanks to everyone who wrote in and contributed. This post wouldn’t exist without you!
The is amazing! Thank you for gathering and compiling all of this. My fridge shouldn’t be dying anytime soon but my husband is really looking at a kitchen aid fridge. I’ve been in love with the black stainless Samsung that has a double opening door on one side but I see that Samsung is constantly getting poor reviews. Since I’m mostly set on the black stainless, I’m glad other companies have started making it too. Anyway, I’ll certainly be looking over this post again when we’re ready to get a new fridge!
