We headed to Maine to escape the heat for a bit, and when we pulled up after 9pm to our Airbnb, there were people in it. I idiotically looked at Nate and said, “That is so strange that the owners would leave a car in the driveway.” 🫠
The owners did not in fact leave a car in the driveway. Upon doublechecking our reservation we realized that we had shown up a day early. Yep. In a rental car loaded down with suitcases and overtired kids.
We started calling hotels in the area and were able to get to adjoining rooms at the Hampton Inn. And you know what the Hampton Inn has? Free breakfast 😎
And that is how a botched reservation became one of the most fun family memories. To quote Allie upon discovering the indoor pool: “This is the best day of my life!!!”
I share this namely as a reminder that kids are pleased by far less fancy things than what we think they are. Sometimes a waffle maker at a chain hotel can be just as magical (and far cheaper) than the grandest of vacations.
(Also, always double check your reservations 😂🤦🏼♀️)
