Some people call it toffee. Some top it with nuts or crushed heath bar. Or m&m’s. So many options! Maybe even some Halloween sprinkles to make it festive (or just put a bowl of candy corn out next to it like I did ?). This keeps in the fridge a very long time (but doesn’t have to be refrigerated). However, it doesn’t freeze super well. I like to make it for an event or when people are coming over; otherwise, I tend to eat it out of the fridge all week and come Friday (since Nate doesn’t love sweets…weirdo) I have consumed an entire pan of pine bark. Not ideal.
**you can do any kind, or combine kinds. When I have both, I love to do white and semi-sweet to give the bark a marbled look.
1. line a cookie sheet lined with either parchment or foil
2. line the saltines in the pan, getting them as close together as possible
3. on the stove, bring butter, sugar to a boil and let boil 3 minutes
4. pour the butter sugar mixture over the saltines and spread with a spatula to coat evenly
5. place in a 400 degree oven for 5 minutes
6. after 5 minutes, pour the chocolate chips on top, give them a second to melt, then spread with a spatula to coat evenly
7. allow to cool and harden completely (can place in the fridge if you have room)
8. Break into pieces and viola!
2 sticks butter (I used salted)
1 c dark brown sugar
1 bag (12 oz.) chocolate chips of your choice
saltines (approx 1.5 sleeves)
