Ever since we started our family, Nate has been taking the kids out to eat at restaurants (often without me there). It is never any place fancy, but my goodness is he consistent. This is in large part due to the man’s love for a cheeseburger, but he also sees it as a valuable learning experience for the kids. This weekend we both had the chance to take all four to lunch and I had the opportunity to pick Nate’s brain about why he loves it so much. Here is what he said:
1. They learn to talk to grownups: When they go out to eat, Nate has them order their own food. He reminds them to say please and thank you, and to speak loud enough for the waiter to hear.
2. They learn patience: At home, they usually come to the table when dinner is ready. At a restaurant, they have to learn to sit at the table and wait for the food to come. After the meal is over, they again have to wait for the check to be paid.
3. They have FUN! He loves the uninterrupted time to talk with them, and they love the chance to go to a real live restaurant and order something they want.
Anyways, I thought this could be helpful to share for anyone who also feels anxious taking their kids out to eat, or are starting to dip their toes back in the water now that places are opened back up again. The entire experience is far from perfect, and there are ample moments where correction is needed, but at the end of the day, it’s simply a learning experience. And heck, even if it goes poorly, there’s always next time, and (hopefully) you got to eat fries ???? ????
